Chedhams Yard, Wellesbourne

The photo's were all taken by © Derek Billings at an open day in August 2005.

The yard is a former 19th century blacksmith’s and wheelwright’s workshop, hidden away in the centre of the village of Wellesbourne in Warwickshire. The yard was owned and run by seven generations of the Chedham family, and the last of those who worked there, Bill Chedham, still lives in the village. The yard is crammed with tools, some objects made on the site and the materials to make them. Never having had the benefit of running water or electricity, the yard is an outstanding example of traditional working methods and tools. In its heyday the yard served the local agricultural community, with a philosophy of making the best of whatever was available. Following the award of a £1m grant the yard plans to re-open in Spring 2012 after extensive work is completed.
