Many thanks to Peter Chater & Mark Abbott. May 2010.

June 2010 WIAS Meeing. The last meeting of the season had been reserved for a members' session, but I have had the chance to book Mr. Bernie Cope to speak on 'The history of Toye, Kenning and Spencer', manufacturers of ribbons and a range of other regalia, with a strong Bedworth connection. Mr Cope is usually busy on Thursday evenings , but fortunately he can be free on Thursday June 10th., and I felt I should take the opportunity to invite him to speak at our meeting on that night. He will be bringing many samples of the company's work, and I feel sure it will be an excellent evening. This means that the members' session will be part of the first meeting of next season, which also includes the AGM.

Martin Green, WIAS Chairman. April 2010.

Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry - June 26th to August 30th
An Inland Adventure - Photographs by Robert Longden
During the late 1940s and early 1950s Robert Longden produced a remarkable portfolio of high quality black and white images.  These photographs record the working life of the narrowboat people he encountered at the confluence of the Oxford and Coventry Canals, Hawkesbury Junction and Sutton Stop.  The exhibition will be supplemented with photographs by Stephen Pochin, great-grandson of Longden, and an artist and photographer in his own right.  These will convey the changes to the landscape and usage of the waterways in 2009.
Exhibition organised by Stephen Pochin in collaboration with the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum.

Just a reminder that Dr. Malcolm Dick will be talking on 'Matthew Boulton and the celebration of industrial technology' at 7.30 pm on Thursday April 8th. in the Pyne Room, Warwick School. Dr Dick will be bringing copies of his book 'Matthew Boulton - a revolutionary player', for sale at a reduced price.

Newsletters 8 - 14, Sept 2002 to March 2004. Does anyone still have paper copies of these newsletters filed away at home? The webmaster would very much like to borrow these editions for a few days so they can be scanned and added to the website. The copies of these newsletters currently available on the site are in a plain typed format, all the others are now in the same style as the paper version and it would be nice to complete the set. If you can help please send me an email at enquiry@warwickshireias.org or use the link at the top of the page. January 2010.

Leamington Spa - Russell Street. Peter Coulls has kindly supplied a photograph, taken with an instamatic camera in 1976, of the the former Flowers Brewery Store premises. The building at that time was still clearly painted with their name but looked in need of some tlc! Peter Riley also took some photos of the same location in 2001. By then the office building had been fully renovated but the rear yard remained very original, and still does to this day. In 2001 it was being used to store part exchange vehicles from the garage next door and hidden in the very back corner was an ancient breakdown truck.

The building is of an interesting design with the splendid archway leading through to the yard. This may originally have provided stabling and storage for horses and a variety of carts as although there is evidence to show that the premises were occupied by at least two breweries it may have been originally built for a local haulier. There are also records that show it in use between the wars by a motor haulage service operated by Mr. W H Yardley. WIAS member Richard Storey has carried out some research and anyone interested in reading more about the property may like to refer to the below reference.
